Instagram is testing a full-screen experience for its app
Instagram is testing a new full-screen experience for the iOS app. The test is only available to users in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland.
Instagram has tested various features over the years, including Stories, Direct Messages, and Direct Albums. The company also added GIF support to the app earlier this year.
The full-screen mode is currently only available in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Users can access it by swiping left on their feed or tapping "Full Screen" on the bottom right corner of their screen.
The move comes amid a growing trend of social media apps making changes to their user interface to create more immersive experiences. TikTok recently launched a new version of its app that allows users to view videos in full-screen mode for 24 hours at once; Instagram's test follows suit by allowing users to watch videos in full-screen mode as well.
The full-screen experience allows users to scroll through photos in a grid layout instead of being able to swipe between them like they can in the standard version of the app. This will likely be useful when scrolling through large collections of photos or videos, but it might also make the app feel slower when using other features such as commenting on posts or liking them.
